To those who say that the Dems now have 60 Senators, I say, they already did. Specter has been a Democrat for 30 years. Now he’s just not pretending any longer.
It’s fitting that at what will hopefully be the end of his long, horrible career, Specter has completely abandoned everything that he once claimed to believe in. He claimed that he believed in the Republican Party – that was a lie. He claimed that he believed in a two-party system – that was a lie. He claimed that he believed in doing the right thing – that was a lie. Now the mask has been torn off, and everyone sees once and for all that the only thing Arlen Specter believes in is Arlen Specter.
Specter didn’t all of a sudden realize that he’s a Democrat. He switched parties because he knew that Pat Toomey was going to destroy him in the primary. He knows that his only hope of remaining a Senator lies in the Democratic Party. And so he has finally gone back to where he belongs, not because of any great philosophical revelation about how the GOP has supposedly gone “far right” or any other such rhetorical bull crap, but in a last ditch effort to save his job. Pathetic to the end.
Good riddance, Specter. May the Democrats reject you as well.
