State of the Union

I didn’t watch it.

But Brett Lieberman did, and reports on Senator Casey’s first SOTU.

Sandwiched between likely presidential contenders Hillary Clinton and Joseph Biden with Barack Obama directly in front, Casey was guaranteed plenty of prime face time on national television.

A smiling Casey was greeted by many well-wishers when he entered the House chamber with the rest of the Senate. But then looking a little lost in his new surroundings, he followed Biden’s lead to a seat.

“The staff wanted to get people seated, so I was directed to sit where I sat,” said Casey.

“It just so happened that it was in a row where there were probably more cameras directed,” he said. “They didn’t say pick any seat. They said ‘Sen. Casey go sit in that row.’”

Fortunately for Casey, he didn’t blow his prime position or his first State of the Union, based on my view from the front row in the press gallery. He fell in right on cue, clapping, standing or sitting most of the time along with his Democratic colleagues.

True to form, Casey was solid and steady throughout the president’s speech. He offered polite, you might say reserved, applause, but didn’t go wild.

He also has a caption contest with a Hillary picture. It’s bad candid one… which always makes for a good contest.

JK @ ThreeSources also watched it, and writes…

The health care proposal is “Dead On Arrival” says Nina Easton of Fortune on FOXNews, according to her sources and no one disagrees. Arnold Kling gave it an A+, the Dems a DOA+. It is safe to say he doesn’t have a chance in hell of getting it, but it might be something the GOP could build on for 2008. The health care hybrid is broken. The Democrats want to make it more collectivist, the Republicans more free market. That’s a good fight.

Hotair.com has a gallery of snoozing Senators.

Bob Casey isn’t snoozing… well hard to tell, but the winner is definately Senator McCain, who took a 10 second powernap.

Here I thought the big joke was Bush’s early bedtime.

Update: Senator McCain was reading along.
