Milton Street Indicted

The brother of Philadelphia mayor John Street has been indicted by the US Attorney’s office in Philadelphia today.

Milton Street, John Velardi Sr., and Matthias Schwabe were named in the complaint filed by Pat Meehan, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. The men are charged with mail fraud, wire fraud, honest services fraud and filing false tax returns.

Mayor Street spoke Tuesday afternoon after his brother’s indictment was reported.

“My brother is allowed to do business with the city of Philadelphia juts like person is allowed to,” Mayor Street said. “As far as I know, he has played by the rules. … I believe these indictments are regard how he conducted his private financial business.”

Mayor Street said as far he could tell, his brother was indicted for tax-return problems.

Leveraging the fraternal relationship was the name of his game.

“Milton Street wanted the IRS to believe he was a humble street vendor selling hot dogs and soda,” said Meehan. “What he didn’t tell them was that he was making millions on nothing more than his last name.”

According to the indictment, PAS hired Street in 2002 as a consultant at $30,000 a month, believing that Street could help PAS hold onto its airport maintenance contract.

Meehan said in November 2002, PAS contracted with Street’s company to perform facilities maintenance work at the airport, despite the fact that Street had no experience in facilities maintenance.

In addition, Milton Street controlled something like 17% of the Live-Aid concession stands this summer.
