Bob Asher: GOP Conservatives are Nazis

Part three of the interview with Bob Asher, former chairman of the Pa GOP, current national committeeman.

The Bulletin: Why did the Republicans lose power so dramatically in 2006? What is the catalyst for change that needs to occur to avoid the same results this year? Has that change taken place?

Bob Asher: There are those who say we need to level the party and start over. The last time I heard that was 1933 in Germany, to be “pure.” There are some of us who were conservative supporters when conservatives weren’t in favor. We worked for Goldwater and for Reagan, and we brought the party to where it is. Do I think the Republicans of today have a coherent message? No. I think we’ve lost our way. In a political supermarket, the top shelf is Democrat, the next is Independent, the third is “I don’t give a damn” and the bottom shelf is Republicans. I don’t think we’re delivering our message properly. We need to a better job at having a message that attracts voters.

Really now, Bob… Nazis? F’ing Nazis?

He doesn’t really answer the question…. only says we’re on the bottom shelf.

Maybe because the real reason the GOP brand is so crappy because the President and the GOP majorities in Congress did such a shitty job of running a Republican government?

Just maybe.

To his credit, he doesn’t claim to be a conservative, just a conservative supporter, and only an occasional one at that. Sadly, he goes back to 1980 for his last example. How about Reagan in ‘76 Bob?

This is the GOP leader who has taken the time to support every GOP moderate when a conservative choice was available… and the GOP leader whose PAC gave $5,000 to Philly Democrat Michael Nutter when he ran for mayor?

In unrelated news, Senator Lieberman will be visiting Jewish leaders on behalf of Senator McCain in Pennsylvania next week.
