The Obama Speech March 18 2008
Unfortunately a phone call this morning interrupted my Obamassiah live blogging.
My thoughts?
Feh.
Instead of distancing himself from the America hating Pastor Wright, the second coming decided to take down Geraldine Ferraro and his own grandmother.
Really.
They don’t compare. Ferraro hasn’t been throwing racial fireballs from the pulpit for decades, and his Grandmother, i’m fairly certain, never did.
I still don’t get the reason why people would be passing out and fainting listening to him. Yeah, the President is a lousy speaker reader, but jeez… it’s not phenomenal. President Clinton was far better.
Let’s go around the horn in Pa.
Daniel U-A @ YoungPhillyPolitics decided today to go for Obama:
God Damn America for treating our citizens as less than human.
I am a patriotic American. In my ultra-privileged life, I have had the opportunity to wear the American flag on my chest, representing our Country at International races, hearing announcers call “United States of America” and realizing they were referring to me. (It is a crazy moment every time you hear it.) I dream every day of- and put my life on hold- to try to have the honor of representing our Country at the Olympics. And, one of the most emotional times of my life was when I was abroad during the September 11th attacks and stood in a blocks long line at our Embassy, just so I could touch our flag. I love this Country, and have been privileged by so many people and institutions within it…
But, God Damn America for treating our citizens as less than human.
Yeah! God Damn America for being a land of opportunity, free-est country on earth, and shining light for the world.
I am having a problem in rationalizing these two very distinct positions. Sen. Obama claims the snippets have been magnified, yet the website tells a different story.
Sen. Obama’s hope is for the next generation. Yet if his own children hear the same hate-filled words from the pulpit, how will they learn that while the scabs and the wounds of segregation run deep, they’ll never heal if they’re constantly picked at?
“I think the media tends, on both sides, to overblow these issues because they’re juicy and sexy and they’re a lot more important than what the candidates’ plans are for the economy. And I think, to a great extent, the media is guilty of that,” he said. “The public sort of shrugs their shoulders and say ‘Oh, everyone’s got some supporters who do crazy things or say crazy things. I don’t think the public focuses on them as much as the media does. But when the media does focus on them, then they tend to have a little more resonance with the public.”
If any other politician tried a move this transparently cynical, to nudge the conversation away from his own craven tolerance of racial hatred to some sort of redemption narrative by which to hold that against him is to be, in effect, objectively anti-progress, the media would vivisect him. Instead, expect a full-body orgasm on “Hardball” tonight as the thrill in Chris Matthews’s leg spreads accordingly.
…
Here’s a blank check to white racists to join the restrictive country club of their choice because, after all, they can no more disown white racism than they can the entire white community
Finally!
