Diana Irey Vindicated August 9 2007
Back in 2006 when Diana Irey ran against incumbent Congressman John “Jack” Murtha, the centerpiece of her campaign was Haditha. Specifically, it was the fact that Murtha condemned the Marines involved in the Haditha incident in which Iraqis were killed.
According to Murtha, the Marines were murderers. Irey argued that it was wrong for Murtha to condemn the Marines before they had a fair trial. While Irey was right to say that our troops should be given the benefit of a doubt, it turns out that she was also right in that at least some of the Marines were found innocent of the charges:
Haditha: Charges dropped against two Marines
It’s a shame that the people in Murtha’s district chose to overlook this behavior from him, and just put him back in office because “I hate Bush”, “Republicans are corrupt”, or whatever ridiculous reason you can come up with for the 2006 rout of the Republicans. I saw Diana Irey on local TV several times, and she seemed like a very genuine and serious person to me. It’s a shame that voters were against her just because of the “R” after her name.
If the rest of the Marines charged in the Haditha incident are found innocent, I think that Murtha should seriously consider resigning from office.
