Iverson Returns to Sixers December 2 2009
For a team in need of “something”… this is probably it.
“In light of the recent injury to Lou Williams, which will sideline him for close to eight weeks, we felt that Allen was the best available free agent guard to help us at this time,” said team president Ed Stefanski said in a statement released by the team.
As a result perhaps the most star-crossed player in the franchise’s history has returned. He will make his second Sixers debut Monday against the Denver Nuggets, who acquired him from the Sixers in 2006. Next, oddly enough, the 34-year-old Iverson will face Detroit Pistons, who acquired him from the Nuggets.
Drafted by the Sixers with the top overall pick in 1996, Iverson was named Rookie of the Year. Under Larry Brown, the Sixers gradually improved and reached the NBA Finals in 2001. They stunned the planet and beat the Lakers in Game 1, a victory highlighted by Iverson’s triumphantly step over Tyronn Lue. Iverson was named NBA MVP that season.
That was the highpoint of Iverson’s Sixers career. The low point came in 2006, when his relationship with the Sixers soured to the point where he was traded to Denver. Last season the Nuggets traded him to Detroit, where he played 54 games before becoming a free agent – and signing with the Grizzlies. His tenure in Memphis lasted only three games.
We’ll see how long this lasts.
But it sure to make for good gossip TV.
