Montco: Matthews Is a Nice Guy

Jim Matthews is having a hard time holding the reigns of county government.

He and Joe Hoeffel have to make some tough calls.

The proposal drawing the most ire would require county employees to share the expenses of health insurance that previously had been provided free to them and their families. Also, this insurance plan has higher co-pays.

Add this to proposals for wage freezes and payless holidays and it is not surprising that many employees, particularly the lower-paid workers, are irate.

These worker bees have let the commissioners know their thoughts in a deluge of e-mails, many of which are emotional and some are downright nasty.

Still, you would think that the commissioners would have the grace to respond in a diplomatic fashion to these outpourings. Well, guess again.

Commissioner Chairman James R. Matthews labeled the comments of one e-mailer as “peevish,” said he wouldn’t “belabor” the writer with his own challenges and said he essentially had to answer to 460,000 voters. He ends his missive with, “Hope your day improves.”

I understand there are far worse emails in circulation, including one telling an emailer that he’s lucky to have a job and another gem that is expletive laced.
