The Stupak Amendment and the Trustworthiness of the Democrats November 8 2009
Once again, the American people have allowed themselves to be played for fools by our “representatives” in Congress. This time we fell for Nancy Pelosi’s stratagem of allowing a vote on the Stupak Amendment, which was never anything but a trick.
The vehemently pro-abortion Pelosi appeared to graciously allow a vote on the pro-life amendment to her health care bill as a show of good faith. But those of us who know better know that Pelosi is nothing but a conniver who always gets what she wants. And she didn’t want the Stupak Amendment in her bill.
So why allow a vote on it? Some say that it was in order to gain the support of pro-life Democrats in Congress. And those people would be wrong. The sad, stark reality that the pro-life movement refuses to admit is that there is no such thing as a pro-life Democrat. There are only Democrats in pro-life districts who are at times forced to vote pro-life in order to avoid being thrown out by their constituents.
That was Pelosi’s true purpose in allowing a vote on the Stupak Amendment – it was done in order to give cover to the Democrats who “represent” pro-life districts so that they can claim they voted against abortion funding and thus appease their voters.
Now, you might say, without the Stupak Amendment, PelosiCare never would have passed in the first place. But if Pelosi needed congressmen in conservative districts like Altmire to vote for it, they would have sacrificed themselves to vote for it. As I said, what Pelosi wants, she gets. When she got her 218 votes, the pressure was off Altmire and he was free to vote in a manner truly representative of his district.
Pelosi’s machinations also achieved a secondary objective – increasing the tensions between economic conservatives and the pro-life movement. Economic conservatives who oppose PelosiCare because it is economic tyranny and who think that it would not have passed without the Stupak amendment are furious with National Right to Life and other pro-life groups today, and blame them for the passage of the bill. This is a win for the Democrats who seek to turn us against each other.
Now, if the Senate approves a similar bill, Pelosi and her pro-abort legions in Congress will be able to strip the Stupak Amendment from the final version of the bill which is sent to Obama’s desk. And WHEN they do it, the “pro-life” Democrats will throw up their hands and say that they tried to stop funding for abortion but they were unsuccessful in doing so. Naturally the media will go along with the subterfuge, and both America as a whole and the pro-life movement will be dealt crippling blows.
Note that I said “if” the Senate approves a similar bill. The Senate is where we must now focus all of our attention. WE MUST MAKE SURE THAT PELOSICARE IS DEAD ON ARRIVAL IN THE SENATE! KILL THE BILL!
