On This Day In History

Hey, today is “Kiss And Make Up” Day.

On this day in 325 AD the Council of Nicaea adopts the Nicaean Creed, making belief in the Holy Trinity official Church doctrine.

On this day in 1814, the British army occupied Washington, D. C. and set fire to the public buildings. Some people today wonder if we could book them for a return engagement.

On this day in 1819 Allen Pinkerton, founder of the first American detective agency, was born. Pinkerton’s organization became famous through his pursuit of Jesse James, the Daltons, and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. In the 1870’s Pinkerton detectives infiltrated an Irish terrorist organization in the Pennsylvania coalfields, the Molly Maguires, and were instrumental in identifying, arresting and convicting its leaders.

On this day in 1922 the Cubs beat the Phillies 26-23 — still the highest scoring MLB game ever.

And on this day in 1999, the Phils completed a two-game sweep of the defending NL champion San Diego Padres by a combined score of 33-3 (18-2; 15-1). They then went on to lose 26 of their remaining 36 games and finished the season under .500.

And a “Happy Birthday” to Sean Connery.
