But Wouldn’t Jesus Support Universal Health Care? August 15 2009
Applying Jesus to modern political issues is often ridiculous, especially when done by people who advocate a separation of church and state which is so complete and so severe that government employees are not even allowed to speak the name of Jesus without being fined or otherwise punished. Still, there are those who are attempting to use the name of Jesus to promote universal health care:
MSNBC host: Hey, wouldn’t Jesus want us to have universal health care?
The answer to the question is, as long as we’re taking care of the poor, Jesus wouldn’t care what kind of health care we have. That’s pretty much the Catholic Church’s position. It’s also why it will be difficult for you to find any modern politician, Democrat, Republican, or otherwise, who thinks that Welfare should be abolished.
We already have Welfare. We already have Medicaid. These programs were designed to be a final government safety net for the poor, to preserve them alive until they were able to get back on their feet. They were never intended to subsidize generation after generation of families who are forever stuck in poverty.
If it is truly necessary to do so, we can expand our Welfare programs to those who make a little bit more money, if they are indeed too poor to afford health coverage. However, we must also make more of an effort to ensure that those who are on Welfare are also on a track to get off of Welfare. Jesus wouldn’t care if we have universal health care or not as long as we take care of the poor, but he definitely wouldn’t like us to leave the poor trapped in an endless cycle of poverty when we have the ability to break them out of that cycle.
