Mensch Confirmed for Pa-Sen 24

The Republicans officially chose Montgomery County’s Bob Mensch to be their candidate in the special election for the 24th Senatorial District.

The only thing we’ve heard from the Democrats about this race is “we dont want a special election…”

Probably because they haven’t chosen a candidate and are utterly disorganized.

Update: Well, OK, they have a candidate.

Following a unanimous vote of support to be the Republican Party’s candidate in the 24th Senatorial District, Representative Bob Mensch today renewed his pledge to fight for fiscal responsibility in Harrisburg and oppose any form of tax increases on Pennsylvania residents. Mensch received the full support of conferees from Montgomery, Northampton, Lehigh, and Bucks Counties at a nominating convention held tonight to select the party’s candidate to fill the seat vacated by former Senator Rob Wonderling.

“Even in the current economic crisis, there are still some in Pennsylvania government who believe raising personal taxes on working families and increasing state spending is the right direction for the Commonwealth,” said Mensch. “I have been fiscally responsible during my tenure and with the support of voters, I will continue my fight to restore some form of fiscal sanity to Harrisburg.”

As a member of the House Republican Policy Committee Task Force on Budget and Economic Policy, Mensch has strongly opposed Governor Ed Rendell’s proposal to increase Pennsylvania personal income taxes citing concerns that the increase would become permanent, hurt struggling Pennsylvania workers, and slow the state’s economic recovery. He has also joined with 88 fellow legislators and the Commonwealth Foundation in agreeing to work toward a balanced budget that funds public safety, education, and human services without raising taxes.

Mensch also indicated that if elected to the Senate, he will continue to champion legislation he authored in the House to combat the growing problem of prescription drug abuse. The legislation, H.B. 1144, targets some of the main methods in which prescription drugs are diverted to street and motorcycle gangs and other drug dealers who are increasingly trafficking and selling controlled prescription drugs. Gil Kerlikowske, Director of National Drug Control Policy and President Barack Obama’s new drug czar recently stated that “diversion and abuse of prescription drugs are a threat to our public health and safety — similar to the threat posed by illicit drugs such as heroin and cocaine.”

Mensch also vowed to continue his efforts to reform Pennsylvania’s unemployment compensation system which has seen an increased burden placed upon it as a result of the current economic crisis and increased unemployment in the state. Legislation he has introduced seeks to help unemployed residents find new employment, speeds up the time frame in which departing employees can receive unemployment after they receive severance pay, as well as various other reforms.

“As a member of the Senate, I will continue to fight for common sense solutions to the problems facing Pennsylvania residents, be a strong advocate of open space preservation, and work to improve the job and business climate in the state,” said Mensch. “In the coming weeks, I look forward to talking with residents from throughout the 24th Senatorial District, listening to their concerns, and earning their support so that I can fight for their interests in the Pennsylvania Senate.”

State Representative Bob Mensch currently represents the 147th Legislative District in Montgomery County. The district consist of the Townships of Douglass, Lower Frederick, Marlborough, and parts of New Hanover, Perkiomen, Salford, Skippack, Upper Frederick, Upper Hanover, and Upper Salford. The District also includes the Boroughs of East Greenville, Green Lane, Pennsburg, Red Hill and Schwenksville.
