Penguins Abandon Successful Strategy, Lose Game 4

The Penguins decided to play like they in Games 1 and 2 today (which they lost) instead of playing like they did in Game 3 (which they won). The inferior strategy was insufficient to help them win, even with the home-ice advantage.

Sigh. Now the Pens will have to win three games in a row to win the series, while the Red Wings only need to win one. I’m not about to give up, but if the Pens had just done exactly as they did in Game 3 today, this series could be tied up. Plus, the fact that the Pens failed to register a single shot on goal during an 87 second 5-on-3 when they were down by one goal near the end of the game indicated that they didn’t have the will to win tonight.

Penguins, if you want to win Game 5, then dump and chase. If you want to lose Game 5, then don’t dump and chase. It’s as simple as that.

More Pennsylvania Pictures

Another weekend, time for more Pennsylvania Pics. This week, Lancaster County!

Lets start with a hot Amish babe. This picture was taken on a rural road not far from the Green Dragon, which was presumably her destination.

She kept glancing back to see if we were going to pass, and got a bit annoyed when we didn’t. She’s got a sort of Kelly McGillis thing going on there.

Of course the GD is just a glorified flea market and I didn’t take many pictures there, though I did pig out on the ice cream. So on to a better location — Landis Valley Farms. Lots of picture opportunities there.

Barry’s World

The recent controversy surrounding Senator Obama’s constant gaffes is misdirected. Most commentators make the faulty assumption that Barack Obama lives in the same world as the rest of us. Lets look at the contrast between Barry’s World and reality.

Barry’s World: Obama’s uncle liberated Auschwitz in WWII

Reality: Soviet troops liberated Auschwitz, Obama’s mother is an only child

Barry’s World: Obama can “see fallen heroes” in the audience at his speeches

Reality: Fallen veterans do not come back from the dead to attend Obama speeches

Barry’s World: Kansas tornadoes killed 10,000 people in 2007

Reality: 12

Barry’s World: “I’ve now been in 57 states. I think I’ve got one left to go.”

Reality: American flags have 50 stars for a reason, but maybe Obama isn’t very familiar with that flag

Barry’s World: Obama’s parents got together because of the Selma march.

Reality: Obama was born in 1961. The Selma march was in 1965.

Barry’s World: The US needs to send more Arabic translator to Afghanistan

Reality: Afghanis speak Pashto, Farsi, and other non-Arabic languages.

Barry’s World: “Iran doesn’t pose a serious threat to us “and “tiny countries with small defense budgets can’t do us harm”

Reality: Iran’s president has called America the Great Satan, and vowed to attack the US with nuclear weapons as soon as possible.

Barry’s World: Hillary won Kentucky because she’s from nearby Arkansas

Reality: Obama’s state Illlinois borders Kentucky…which is not nearby Arkansas.

Barry’s World: Barry’s grandfather enlisted the day after Pearl Harbor

Reality: Barry’s grandfather enlisted one day…and 6 months
after Pearl Harbor

Barry’s World: America needs an extra $1,400,000,000,000 spending in over 100 new government socialized programs and regulations, while companies and families making over $6,250/month need to be heavily taxed to pay for it.

Reality: Didn’t Mao and Stalin already try that?

Obama-McCain, McCain-Obama 08

John McCain needs to find a running mate that is young, energetic, fresh, and without a reputation of being a DC Beltway insider, and can balance his centrist moderate.

Barack Obama needs to find a running mate that is older, experienced, knowledgeable, and has a reputation of knowing how to get things done in DC, and can balance his extreme leftist stances.

Aren’t they really just looking for each other?

Mexican Refugees?

With the amount of rampant violence and murder from unchecked drug cartels and reported al Qaeda and Hezbollah involvement in Mexico, at some point, should Mexicans rushing across the US border be considered refugees?

Generally, a refugee is a person who has fled his/her country because of fear of persecution. U.S. law incorporated the refugee definition contained in the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, Adopted in Geneva in 1951, which defines a refugee as a person who:

“owing to a well founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country; or who, not having a nationality and being outside the country of his former habitual residence as a result of such events, is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to return to it.”

The Refugee Act of 1980 created The Federal Refugee Resettlement Program to provide for the effective resettlement of refugees and to assist them to achieve economic self-sufficiency as quickly as possible after arrival in the United States.

Cash assistance is made available to refugees in such a manner as not to discourage their economic self-sufficiency.

There is a limit of 70,000 refugees granted asylum in the US per year.

In 2007, 48,000 refugees escaped persecution and were granted asylum in the United States.

Top Refugees to the US in 2007 (Source: US Office of Refugee Resettlement):

Burma 9,776
Somalia 6,958

Across The Delaware

Over in Jersey, the Dems have wracked themselves in another intercene primary, but this one seems to have gotten dirty fast. Examine this site:

You’ve had a good run, but we can’t afford the status quo.

You’ve voted against saving American jobs. As we lost jobs here in New Jersey, your company added jobs overseas. The facts.

New Jersey has lost ground since you went to Washington in 1982.
You’ve been in Washington since the early 1980s, but our situation has gotten worse. In fact, New Jersey now ranks dead last in the amount of money it gets back from the federal government. We need a Senator who will fight for our fair share. The facts.

You haven’t been straight with us on Iraq.
Both before and after the Bush administration sent U.S. troops into Iraq, you said you unequivocally favored the military invasion. You even said you were “on the President’s train” regarding the War. The facts.

It goes on.

A response? You betcha:

In his first primary debate last night, Senate candidate Rob Andrews ran away from Rep. Rob Andrews’ 18 year record of voting against the interests of New Jersey families.

Andrews said he opposes the war in Iraq – but failed to mention that he bragged about working with Bush and co-authoring the resolution getting us in. [Congressman Rob Andrews Press Release, September 29, 2002, Op-Ed Submitted to the Gloucester County Times]

Andrews said he supports a timetable for troop withdrawal from Iraq – but failed to mention that he voted three times again withdrawing the troops. [HR 1815, Woolsey amendment, Vote #220, 5/25/05; HR 2601, Ros-Lehtinen amendment, Vote #397, 7/20/01; HRes 612, Vote #648, 12/16/05]

Andrews said he supported a short-term energy policy to alleviate the suffering Americans are facing at the gas pump – but failed to mention that he once said: “I think the best short-term energy policy is to remove Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq.” [Fox News Channel, April, 2002]

Andrews said he opposes a border fence with Mexico – but failed to mention that he voted with the Republicans to fund it. [HR 6061, Vote #446, 9/14/06; CQ Today, 9/13/06]

Andrews said he supports repealing the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans – but failed to mention that he voted to provide a $185 billion tax break to multi-millionaires. [HR 8, Vote #84, 4/04/01; Dallas Morning News, 4/5/01]

Congressman Rob Andrews is running against incumbent Frank Lautenburg. The whole situation is wrought with irony – the type of irony that brings me joy. Andrews is using the age issue, the one which Lautenburg used against Millicent Fenwick, who was much younger than Lautenburg is now. The state Democratic party has admonished Andrews for his temerity, but most of the Congressmen are ambitious Democrats like Andrews. Further, this election is for Toricelli’s seat, the same Torricelli who accepted illegal donations and was hounded out of office by desperate Democrats in 2002. The likely GOP nominee, Dick Zimmer, ran against Torricelli in 1996, and can run as a vindicated opponent.

If the issue of corruption is distant in the mind of New Jersey voters, this story should serve to make it clear:

After a protracted legal battle, Mercer County Superior Court Judge Paul Innes today ordered Gov. Jon Corzine to release about 740 pages of email correspondences between him and union leader/ex-girlfriend Karla Katz.

Katz, of course, was the woman who benefited from a forgiven loan/payment/bribe of about $500,000. No explanation has been given for this obvious conflict of interest.

Am I the only one who finds the entire situation completely and obscenely ironic?

Re: Scotty

“Well, why, all of a sudden, if he had all these grave concerns, did he not raise these sooner? This is one-and-a-half years after he left the administration. And now, all of a sudden, he’s raising these grave concerns that he claims he had. And I think you have to look at some of the facts. One, he is bringing this up in the heat of a presidential campaign. He has written a book and he certainly wants to go out there and promote that book. Certainly let’s look at the politics of it.”

Scotty’s Smackdown

Bob Dole is a bit before my time, but that does not mean he can not deliver a world of pain:

In my nearly 36 years of public service I’ve known of a few like you. No doubt you will ‘clean up’ as the liberal anti-Bush press will promote your belated concerns with wild enthusiasm. When the money starts rolling in you should donate it to a worthy cause, something like, ‘Biting The Hand That Fed Me.’ Another thought is to weasel your way back into the White House if a Democrat is elected. That would provide a good set up for a second book deal in a few years”

Dole goes on to call McClellan a “miserable creature”:

There are miserable creatures like you in every administration who don’t have the guts to speak up or quit if there are disagreements with the boss or colleagues. No, your type soaks up the benefits of power, revels in the limelight for years, then quits, and spurred on by greed, cashes in with a scathing critique”

Bob Dole said it better than most…….hope the Viagra’s still working ;)

Obama: The Hits Keep Comin’

Another problem from Obama’s Church.

When did churches become so political at the pulpit? As a life long active Catholic, I’ve never seen that style of preaching.

In the video, Pfleger wipes his eyes with a handkerchief and suggests Clinton wept because she thought that as a white person and the wife of a former president, she was entitled to the presidency.

“And then, out of nowhere, came ‘Hey, I’m Barack Obama,’ ” Pfleger said during a sermon Sunday at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Illinois. “And [Clinton] said, ‘Oh damn, where did you come from? I’m white! I’m entitled! There’s a black man stealing my show!’ ” Watch Pfleger mock Clinton »

The video shows the congregation laughing and cheering.

Senator Chope did distance himself from the comments, saying he was “deeply disappointed.

In not entirely unrelated news
, in 1996, then Citizen Barack Obama sought (and received) the endorsement of a Marxist third party for his State Senate run.

The New Party’s modus operandi included the political strategy of “electoral fusion,” where it would nominate, for various political offices, candidates from other parties (usually Democrats), thereby enabling each of those candidates to occupy more than one ballot line in the voting booth. By so doing, the New Party often was able to influence candidates’ platforms. (Fusion of this type is permitted in seven states — Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Mississippi, New York, South Carolina, and Vermont — but is common only in New York.)

Though Illinois was not one of the states that permitted electoral fusion, in 1995 Barack Obama nonetheless sought the New Party’s endorsement for his 1996 state senate run. He was successful in obtaining that endorsement, and he used a number of New Party volunteers as campaign workers.

In the meantime, Hillary is slugging back whiskey as the last days of her campaign wind down, looking forward to the “i told ja sos” and 2012.

Stanley Cup Final Game 4 Preview

Game 4 could end up being the most important game in the Stanley Cup Final. In Game 4, we’re going to find out if the Penguins have truly figured out how to defeat the Red Wings ultimate defense or not.

In Games 1 and 2, the Pens suffered numerous turnovers as they attempted to enter the Red Wings’ zone. This was, of course, by the design of the Red Wings and their ultimate defense strategy – get into formation near the blue line, and steal the puck from the opposing team as they attempt to rush in for an attack, then in the confusion skate the puck back to the other side and take some quick shots on goal. Eventually, some of those shots are going to go in. That is exactly how the Red Wings shutout the Pens in two consecutive games.

In Game 3, however, the Pens thought of a way to potentially overcome the Red Wings’ defense. Since the Wings’ strategy revolves around turnovers near the blue line, the Pens would have to stop those turnovers. How? By dumping the puck into the attack zone and then chasing after it.

The old “dump and chase” method has been used by the Pens all season, much to the chagrin of many fans who just wanted the Pens to try skating the puck right into the opponent’s territory. In an interesting twist, the Pens’ experience with dump and chase is what helped them win Game 3, and it could be what helps them win Game 4, too.

While the Red Wings stand around waiting to steal the puck, one of the Pens has already shot the puck into the attack zone while another quickly pursues it, and usually gains possession of it. This results in Detroit having to break formation and go after the puck, and in Game 3, it made them look like a very confused team. So confused that a couple of times, the Pens were able to skate right into the attack zone unopposed!

Detroit has used this ultimate defensive technique to win every series up until now. But, up until now, they have not faced a team that is as good at dump and chase as the Penguins are. And Detroit cannot guard against the Pens’ dump and chase technique without drastically changing their defensive strategy, which will result in them being even more confused.

This singular flaw in Detroit’s otherwise impenetrable defense could very well lead the Pens to the Cup. Only time will tell!

President Bush and his golf “sacrifice”

I just sent the following letter to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Will they print it, or any other letter which points out the truth about what President Bush said about giving up golf? I doubt it.

After reading several letters about President Bush supposedly giving up golf as a sacrifice during a time of war, I decided to look up the original quote from the president. It’s from a May 13, 2008 interview with politico.com, and here it is:

Politico: “Mr. President, you haven’t been golfing in recent years. Is that related to Iraq?”

President Bush: “Yes, it really is. I don’t want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the Commander-in-Chief playing golf. I feel I owe it to the families to be as — to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal.”

Note that it was the politico, not the president, who brought up golf. Note that the president never called it a “sacrifice”. Note that the president did not equate giving up golf with the sacrifice of our troops.

You have to admit that it’s a pretty sad state of affairs when our “news”-papers are full of politically-motivated innuendo, and the electorate is forced to hunt down original quotes and their context to find out what our politicians truly believe.

Hero Shots

In film parlance the “hero shot” is one taken from near ground level, looking up at the person being filmed. If you want to see an expert use of the technique fire up any John Ford/John Wayne film and note the camera placement.

Here’s an example:

So much for cinema heroes.

Here’s a shot of a real hero — my nephew, who will soon be leaving for yet another combat tour. The perspective was inadvertent — the picture was taken by his five-year-old daughter — but in my opinion entirely appropriate.

Palin for Veep

McCain has to think outside the box for his VP pick in order to contrast with Obama. In addition, I think he will want to pick someone almost nobody expects, because that would fit his whole “maverick” image. He does have a safe choice, which is Mark Sanford, which would satisfy almost every Republican. But is he a “non-traditional” choice? Not really, and I doubt Sanford would energize many folks. Sarah Palin is traditional enough to win approval from base folks, has executive experience. and is both a fiscal and social conservative. She lacks foreign policy experience, but McCain does not need that. Palin almost certainly would energize pro-life voters, and she has a unique story to tell.

McCain’s other nontraditional choices pose other problems. He has got the corporate folks, like Cindy Fiorna or Meg Whitman, but they lack government experience are are both too moderate. Picking one of his former rivals is not McCain, and it would be odd if he did so. Past that, he only has governors and Senators to pick from. Cariceri, Huntsman, or Rell would all be non-traditional, but they all have problems themselves. Jindal is too young and in his first year, and would be succeded by a Democrat. Palin is in her second year, and will be succeded by a Republican. I hate to repeat my entire endorsement, but she energizes the base and enhances McCain’s appeal.

If he announced his pick mid-June to mid-July, it would take attention away from what would likely be the end of the Dem contest and the ensuing Obama love fest. I am glad she is at least being considered, as it shows McCain is paying attention to good Republicans. I’ve got a check for $25 for McCain, and this might convince me to give it sooner than July.

Casey: For Border Security

Pakistan’s border that is.

“Every Pakistani leader that we came in contact with assured us that any permanent agreement with these tribal leaders would outlaw these cross-border flows and would expel foreigners who are committing acts of terrorism,” Mr. Casey said. “I need to see demonstrable proof that when a group of leaders in a tribal area say they’re going to stop this and then they give sanctuary to a terrorist, there has to be a penalty that they pay. And the Pakistani leaders claim that they’re going to do that, that they’re going to impose swift and sure punishment when that agreement is not adhered to. We’ll have to see.”

The border regions between the two countries have tended to be a no-man’s land ruled by tribal leaders, with the countries’ top leaders unable, reluctant or simply unwilling to rein in the tribal leaders or try to gain control.

VP Palin?

Holy crap, it might be serious.

A tipster sent us word that John McCain’s VP advance man Arthur Culvahouse has been spotted in Juneau, Alaska. There’s only one reason he would be there – to meet with Alaska Governor Sarah Palin about the Vice President position.

My main concern with Palin on the ticket is that she weakens the experience argument against Obama. Mayor, two year governor, and VP is fast. However, those are all executive positions NOT legislative ones as is Obama’s experience.

That being said, she’s not running for President, McCain is. She’ll be learning the ropes. (Which was Hillary’s offer to Obama, right?)

Governor Palin would (in my estimation) make an excellent VP candidate for McCain. Thomas Cheplick at The American Spectator makes the case that she’s probably the only VP cadidate who can balance the ticket against Obama. She’s also a potential magnet for disaffected Hillary Clinton voters, many of whom are just looking for a reason not to vote for Obama.

Tip to Flip, who adds:

As a lily gilder, she’s fighting the federal government on the doltish decision to list the growing polar bear population as a “threatened” one.

Taxing Strippers

There used to be a day when Republicans were opposed to increasing taxation.

The concept has been dubbed a “pole tax” and it could be called an “uncover charge” – collect $5 for every strip-club visitor in Pennsylvania.

State Rep. Paul Clymer, whose district serves Bucks County, hopes to introduce a bill as early as next week to mandate such a levy.

The money would go to help victims of sexual abuse, to help counter the damage strip clubs do to their communities, the Republican said.

“There are too many risks, too many problems associated with this industry,” such underage drinking, disorderly conduct and prostitution, he said.

After Texas adopted a $5-per-patron tax in January, Clymer lined up 20 sponsors for similar legislation in Pennsylvania.

He decided to revise that proposal, however, after a Texas court found such a tax to be unconstitutional.

There’s a taxing boobs in Harrisburg joke in here somewhere.

No Lame Duck Session

Senator Bob Regola declares victory for reform in Harrisburg.

Today Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi and Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati announced a major victory for reform in Pennsylvania. They announced that there would be no Lame Duck Session after this year’s general election.

This is an issue that I have been leading the fight on for over 3 years. My first day on the job as your State Senator, I introduced then Senate Bill 11 which would amend the State Constitution to ban the Lame Duck Session. This bill went nowhere in the last session so I re-introduced it last year as Senate Bill 468. This bill was passed overwhelmingly by the State Senate but, incredibly, has seen no action in the State House.

A Lame Duck session takes place after the general election. It has been used to pass unpopular pieces of legislation in the past such as tax increases and gambling measures. These bills passed after voters already had their opportunity to hold their elected officials accountable. This is not a good practice and it should end forever. Today’s announcement is the first step in cooking the lame duck for good.

Dark days for the Philadelphia Police Department

It’s a bad year to be a cop in Philly:

In a move that rattled the city’s law-enforcement community, District Attorney Lynne M. Abraham yesterday filed criminal charges against two police officers accused of busting [David] Vernitsky’s jaw after catching him spray-painting a congratulatory message to a newlywed couple on a wall in North Philadelphia.

Let’s be clear: I’m not in favor of police brutality.  But let’s also say that I do feel strongly about respecting law enforcement.  And let’s further say that if any kid of mine got caught committing a crime, the last thing I’m going to do is stand by him while he presses charges against the cops for brutality.  But wait–this is no kid….

Vernitsky’s police encounter began at about 12:30 a.m. last Aug. 26, near 4th Street and Wyoming Avenue, where Fitzgerald and Hill spotted him spray-painting on the wall of a beauty-supply business.

He had just attended a wedding in Port Richmond with some other buddies and wanted to scrawl a tribute to the couple. He had spray-painted the first few letters when Fitzgerald and Hill drove by in a police cruiser, according to Abraham.

(…)

Vernitsky’s friends caught up with him about half block from the graffiti spot. They took him home, and later to the Albert Einstein Medical Center, where he was hospitalized for five days for a broken and dislocated jaw, bruises, and injuries to his face, ribs and groin, Abraham said.

The next morning, Vernitsky’s mother contacted Internal Affairs, which launched an investigation and later referred the case to city prosecutors, Abraham said.

So Vernitsky is a 36-year-old graffitti “artist” whose mommy fights his battles for him.  But just because he is apparently a big loser doesn’t mean the police get carte blanche to beat up on him.  But wait….

And once again, John J. McNesby, president of Lodge 5 of the Fraternal Order of Police, lashed out at Ramsey.

“This is a disgrace,” McNesby said yesterday. “It can’t get any worse . . . Instead of tracking murders in Philadelphia, we should be tracking the persecution of police officers. It’s open season on police officers. Not only do we have to watch out for the criminals on the street, but we have to watch out for the people we work for.”

McNesby said he believes that Vernitsky fabricated the allegations against Fitzgerald and Hill, and asserted that Vernitsky didn’t immediately go to the hospital. McNesby also said Internal Affairs investigators have yet to interview Fitzgerald and Hill to get their version of events.

Hmmm…once again, no due process for the cops so that City Officials can save face.  This is now becoming the typical knee jerk reaction of the City to appease the criminals.

If the cops beat this guy, they deserve their punishment, no question.  But I also think that the City should be erring on the side of the cops, especially in light of the two recent cop killings, the rampant crime and the total lack of cooperation from the D.A. in putting these repeat offenders behind bars.  Oh, and then there’s this, also:

Immediately after a prosecutor’s closing argument yesterday, a judge acquitted two siblings of aggravated assault and related charges in a May 2007 confrontation with police.

(…)

Cordelia Zuber, now 25, and son, Anthony Zuber, now 20, were ecstatic following their acquittals, which came on the third day of their non-jury trial.

(…)

Police Officer Martin McDonald testified that about 9:45 p.m. May 23, 2007, he and his partner, David Palma, stopped their car in front of Anthony Zuber’s car, on Wallace Street near 38th, Mantua, because they saw Zuber drinking vodka from a bottle.

Anthony Zuber testified that he had not been drinking vodka. He had two friends in his car.

McDonald testified that as he was speaking with Anthony, Jasmin Zuber walked by and yelled, cursing, for the officers to leave her brother alone. Jasmin then pushed him, McDonald testified.

After getting pushed, McDonald said he grabbed Jasmin to arrest her. But as Jasmin was pulling away, McDonald said, Anthony Zuber grabbed him from behind in a “choking move.”

McDonald said he had been “pinned up against” a wall. Then, Cordelia Zuber began “grinding” a cell phone in his forehead, he said.

Police officers testified that an angry crowd of about 50 people came to the scene, with some swarming McDonald and Palma.

With the help of other officers, police arrested the three Zubers.

Anthony and Cordelia Zuber, and Anthony’s friend, Quentin Williams, testified differently.

Read the whole thing here then ask yourself this question:  What is a Philadelphia Policeman’s motivation for doing his job?
